Vacuum more than you think
Most carpet wear is abrasion from grit worked down into the base of the pile, not from feet. Vacuum traffic areas twice a week and the rest weekly, slowly enough for the machine to lift.
- Blot spills, never rub — rubbing spreads the stain and distorts the pile
- Work a spill from the outside in, with a clean white cloth
- Lift furniture rather than dragging it; use cups under heavy legs
- Rotate rugs twice a year so sun and traffic wear evenly
- Professional deep clean every 12”“18 months in a normal household
Damp, never wet
Water is the only real enemy of a wood or laminate floor. A well-wrung mop is fine; a bucket sloshed across the boards is how edges swell and joints lift.
- Sweep or vacuum on the hard-floor setting — grit scratches the wear layer
- Mop damp with a neutral cleaner, never a steam mop on laminate
- Wipe spills immediately, especially at board joints
- Felt pads under every chair and table leg
- A doormat at every external door removes most of the grit
Dust weekly, wash rarely
Curtains are large dust filters. A weekly pass with the brush attachment does more for them than an annual wash, and it avoids the shrinkage that ruins a perfect drop.
- Vacuum on low suction, top to bottom, including the heading
- Check the label — most lined curtains should be dry cleaned
- Wipe blind slats with a dry microfibre cloth; damp-wipe PVC only
- Close sun-facing curtains during peak afternoon hours to limit fading
Our climate, our problems
Two things drive most of the callouts we get: monsoon humidity and hard afternoon sun. Both are manageable if you plan for them.
- Leave the expansion gap at every wall — never seal it with silicone
- Run a fan or the AC in closed rooms through the monsoon
- Dry a wet carpet within 24”“48 hours to prevent odour in the backing
- Line or shade west-facing windows; direct sun fades any dye eventually
- Keep your off-cuts — they are the perfect patch material later
